How to Exercise with Hypermobility Without Making Pain Worse

If you’re someone whose hip or shoulder often feels like it lives in a land of its own, or you’re not sure why typical exercises don’t feel good or seem to work for you, or you live with daily pain, Pilates for Hypermobility is for you. If you know you need to get stronger to support your joints, but it seems like a catch 22 because you keep injuring yourself, this course is for you. If you've ever been in a fitness class and wondered why not everything is working for you, this is the course where we break it down. And if you want to be surrounded by others going through the same type of stuff and learn from professionals who get it, this course is for you.

Pilates for Hypermobility is a foundational course that teaches you things other fitness classes skip, the stuff that comes before the warm-up, and the things that will make or break your experience with exercise. It’s all about the foundations and layers of body awareness that need more attention in a hypermobile body. If you’ve wondered why exercise doesn’t always work for you, we want you to know that with hypermobility, we literally have less proprioception than others and therefore need some strategies and guardrails in place to set us up for success. And we are passionate about sharing this information with you!

Pilates for Hypermobility is a two-month container, starting with one month of twice weekly Zoom classes where you get personalized attention and trouble shooting with movement as you learn more about your own anatomy and movement patterns. Can’t come live? The email communication doors are open throughout the entire two months for direct feedback, answers to your questions, and instruction.

Mandee instructs hypermobile students to match what their individual body needs, not just blanket cues.

In the second month, it’s time to replay any missed classes, re-take them for further cementing, and apply what you learned to Foundational Pilates videos that are included with the course. This is also a great time to reach out to your Instructor for guidance and simply process/talk through your experience in the course. Then, when the two months ends, you’re invited to continue along in your movement with hypermobility journey through The Santosha Movement Society, a membership with consistent instructor support, access to discounted private sessions & small group classes (both in studio and Zoom) and unlimited videos.

When the course ends, you’ll be moving better in your daily life, not only just during exercise. And that’s the sweet part about Pilates for Hypermobility- it translates over to so much more and has literally changed the trajectory of the lives of course participants by reducing pain and changing the relationship with their body for the better.

Doing the exercises we learned in class helped me see the pattern in all of my movement practices. For me, it was about being mindful of the points of articulation and range of motion. Using what I’ve learned, I’ve been able to dramatically decrease my daily pain, especially in my shoulders and my right flank, where I have little to no feeling between my armpit and hip, just by finding the balance point between ends of range of motion, if that makes sense. Thank you all for putting this program together!

One more thing: Providers & Instructors are welcome to take the course for their own hypermobile bodies and/or knowledge to help their patients/students. After all, the heart behind this course is to spread awareness and enable others to pass on all the knowledge! Plus, we're now offering an add-on class session just for providers/instructors to talk shop and get more into the details of application.
